Three Cheers for the F.A.T.
March 13, 2010
We’ve only just come across this bloody amazing and truly inspirational story. Tony Quan suffers from a form of motor neuron disease called Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis which renders him paralysed but allows him full use of his mind and eyes. Tony was a graffiti artist and his mates wanted to see his tag on the streets of Southern California once again.
So FREE ART & TECHNOLOGY (F.A.T.) came up with the EyeWriter which utilises low-cost eye-tracking apparatus + custom software that allows paralysed writers and artists to draw using only their eyes. Billed as ‘the latest ocular assault weapon’ it was developed by the Graffiti Research Lab, openFrameworks and The Ebeling Group.
EyeWriter has just won the 2010 Future is Everything Award. We couldn’t get the full embedded video to work on this blog*, so check out the EyeWriter page at F.A.T. for full details.
In their own words…
The Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) Lab is an organization dedicated to enriching the public domain through the research and development of creative technologies and media.
Anyone who wants to make positive changes in their world could learn a lot from these guys
*But we did get this video about a similar project in Mumbai to work without any glitches, enjoy…
