We’re under no illusion regarding the utter contempt the wealthy and their lackies feel for impoverished working class communities, but even we were shocked by Wandsworth Council’s illegal strategy of collective punishment. Unfortunately it seems that the council’s residents are more than used to being treated like criminals…

I’m a tenant of the Rachman landlord, Wandsworth Council, who wants to evict the family of an alleged looter from its council property because he was involved in the riots. This council is a rabid, foaming at the mouth Thatcherite landlord who has more in common with the landlords who evicted the Irish in the Great Famine than the 21st century.

It’s chief councillor, ‘Rabid’ Govinda’, is, if not one of the highest paid councillors in the UK, the highest paid; the rents it charges for its slums, which it fails to adequately maintain with repairs, are one of the highest in the UK; its council tax is one of the lowest in the UK; it spies on you with CCTV wherever you go; it insists dogs of council tenants are micro chipped and refuses to allow dogs to be exercised in its parks; it expects parents of children to have to pay to use playgrounds in its parks; it threatens to evict council tenants if they feed squirrels or pigeons; it records my phone calls to its jobsworths at the Town Hall without my permission; it reluctantly arrives to do its repairs to my slum with a delegation of more official jobsworths with clipboards who take photographs of me and my possessions without my permission and with no justification; it issued me a court summons for £3 council tax arrears and has me on its blacklist.

They are a bunch of f*in fascists.

Let’s hope this doesn’t spread to other boroughs, or the Lambeth Walk might just end up a goose step!

Whilst in opposition the Tories cried many a crocodile tear over the loss of liberties in the UK. As soon as they get into power however they prove themselves to be even more fascistic than the previous Labour government (who themselves managed to create 3000+ new ‘crimes’ and negate the right to trial by jury, Habeas corpus, etc).

Not only are the Tories currently repealing squatters rights (without which the welfare state would never have existed in the first place), they’re also holding SECRET discussions to try and introduce new levels of internet censorship in the UK. This from activistpost.com…

A group of UK copyright lobbyists held confidential, closed-door meetings with Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries to discuss a plan to allow industry groups to censor the Internet in the UK. The proposal has leaked, and it reveals a plan to establish “expert bodies” that would decide which websites British people were allowed to see, to be approved by a judge using a “streamlined” procedure. The procedure will allow for “swift” blocking in order to shut down streaming of live events.

Public interest groups like the Open Rights Group asked to attend the meeting, but were shut out, presaging a regulatory process that’s likely to be a lopsided, industry-centric affair that doesn’t consider the public. The process is characterised as “voluntary,” but the proposal makes reference to the Digital Economy Act, which allows for mandatory web-blocking (thanks to the action of LibDem Lords who submitted a proposal written by a record industry lobbyist as an amendment to the DEA).

The Open Rights Group has a campaign to repeal the DEA that you can sign onto.

The UK government is not alone in it’s drift towards more openly fascist tendencies, this is a global phenomena which will only get worse as capitalism fights desperately for survival in a world of dwindling resources. 0742 Plaque: a tribute to the wonderful life that was Mark Mozaz Wallis

There are some truly beautiful people on this planet of ours, a couple of them left this tribute to Mozaz in one of his favourite places.

A few of us went to Sheffield today to erect a plaque in memory of the explorer Mark Wallis aka 0742 aka Mozaz aka Bucolic who sadly passed away in January, and explore a few of his old haunts. Was a really nice day and a good turn out, nice to see so many familiar faces. It was good to be able to reflect on the many memories we have of the guy.

Anyone who ever knew 0742 will know exactly where this plaque is.
